RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS 7

  1. RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS 7 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Rhialto the Marvellous" by Jack Vance.

Every illustrator has to decide how much effort to put into a drawing. I rarely gave less than my best effort even on the artwork for which I was not going to be paid.

Consider this drawing for "Rhialto," if I had been feeling a bit lazy I might have chosen to draw only the single figure in the lower right area, facing the viewer and perhaps only from the waist up, with no background details. And in doing so I would have saved a lot of the time and effort that I put into creating all those other parts of the picture; the group of magicians in the upper left area, the decorated hanging carpet on the wall below them, and all the rest of it. It would have been a minimal effort.

But at the very beginning of my career as an illustrator I decided that I would have to rely on the sales of my original drawings and paintings to be the major source of income, and that meant avoiding "minimal efforts". That decision was based on the reality that the few pro SF magazine and book publishers that I dealt with did not pay enough for me to earn a decent living. So I used them as my personal art catalogs where fans and art collectors would see my artwork and phone or write to me offering to buy the originals. And they did, and those sales exceeded what I earned from the publishers, and I managed to earn a decent living. My "extra effort" paid off.

    Desideratum 5:
In this infinite universe where I live, everything is moving as it should.
The past has no power over me because I am willing to learn, to change.
I do not believe in limitations, they do not exist in me.
I am in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.
